In WordPress, an Avatar is a graphical representation of a user. It is also known as a user’s profile picture. Avatars are usually displayed next to the user’s name or comment in WordPress.
WordPress uses Gravatar service to display user avatars. Gravatar is a web-based service that provides globally recognized avatars. Users can create an account on Gravatar, upload their avatar image, and associate it with their email address. Whenever they leave a comment or post on a WordPress site using the same email address, their avatar will automatically appear next to their name.
In addition to Gravatar, WordPress also allows users to upload their own custom avatar image. The uploaded avatar can be used on the website where the user has uploaded it. You can also use a plugin to let your users upload their avatar from wp-admin profile section instead of using gravatar.
